DAB Expansion
My personal Blog page had filled up with radio articles and comments, all of which I loved to read but they were getting mixed up with personal traffic, and my other interests (I'm sure it will amaze some of you to learn that I DO have other interests, as well as radio).
So in future, all the radio 'gubbins' will be found on this BLOG. Please do bookmark the Blog if you want to find it easily - these Googly addresses are not very easy to learn are they, nor remember! I have no idea how I got this awful long-winded Google address. I don't use it for email or anything else, just this Blog.
So, whats happening in the radio world in 2021?
We certainly had no idea that 2020 would turn out as it has. One thing is for certain: there will be some big changes. Again!
The radio landscape in the UK will expand massively. Licences to operate 25 new DAB MULTIPLEXES have already been advertised, and 45 would be operators already big to operate them, so each one WILL come on the air. Each of those will be able too carry thirty unique radio streams / channels / stations. Each of the small scale DAB multiplexes cover a city or the area around a town. That means that, potentially, many of the stations should be able too "wash their face", especially if their output is supported by listeners and they use some creative ideas to monetise their broadcasts. Too many radio stations commit to the 'spot ads' and a little bit of sponsorship. There really is MORE, much more in fact, than this to commercial radio.
Some of the new stations may go to the wall, their failure brought about by lack of listeners and lack of revenue (and the two are sometimes, but not always, closely linked).Following hard on the heels of those 750 new channels. (25 mixes x 30 channels each) there will be even more, as the regulator will be offering further rounds of stations. The next batch will be. a couple of dozen new mixes in towns across Lancashire and North Wales. I shall write more about those in my next blog
If you want to know more about the expansion of DAB, and how it all works, I have a new book explaining everything. Its called:
DAB & DAB+. the Future of Radio
and its available from World of Radio. (https://worldofradio.co.uk/DAB.html) for £12.95. Or you can order it from Amazon or at your favourite local bookshop.
Everyone interested in radio needs to know the information contained in this book - it COULD change YOUR future?
